Adapters
Shturman gets the car's speed through an OBD-II adapter (often labelled ELM327) that plugs into the car's diagnostic port.
Compatibility
- iPhone: the adapter's name or description must say “BLE”, “Bluetooth 4.0”, “Wi‑Fi” or “iOS”. iPhone works only with those. If it says only “Bluetooth” or “Bluetooth 2.0”, the adapter will most likely not work with an iPhone.
- Android: any adapter with Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi will do.
The app only reads the car's data and changes nothing in it.
Shturman also guides without an adapter, but then it estimates the speed automatically from the speed limits on the roads along the route, so accuracy is lower, and the driver marks stops and corrections themselves.
Connecting
- Plug the adapter into the car's port (usually under the steering wheel).
- Turn on the ignition.
- Open Shturman and choose the adapter from the list at first launch or in the settings. After that the app connects to it by itself.
On Android, an adapter that is not in the app's list is first paired in the phone's Bluetooth settings (the code is usually 1234 or 0000). The app connects to a Wi‑Fi adapter by itself; the iPhone asks for permission once.
If it does not connect
- Turn on the ignition and check that the adapter's light is on.
- Close other OBD apps and turn off Bluetooth on other phones that have connected to the adapter: the adapter accepts only one connection.
- On iPhone: remove the adapter from the saved devices in the phone's Bluetooth settings, then connect again.
- Unplug the adapter for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
- Send a problem report from the app's settings, choosing the adapter as the reason, and add a trip if trip records are turned on.
